Gallery: old chips

Here's another gallery of decapsulated IC chips. They are very old and they were made in 1790s or 1980s. Because of CERDIP package it was very easy to open them. CERDIP is a package made of two ceramic plated joined together with a glue. You just need to cleave them carefully with a knife. Despite the decapsulation, these integrated circuits still work! In old IC's transistors were so large that you can see them even without a microscope. Thank's to this, pictures are very clear and having some knowledge about IC manufacturing you can work out where are some gates, flip-flops and other components!.

Motorola MC145402

13-bit A/D and D/A converted designed for modem applications. Very large chip in DIL16!

4066

Four analog switches. You can easily figure out them in the photo.

4017

10-stage Johnson counter.

4029

One of the most advanced counter from the 4000-series. It's able to count in BCD, BIN, up and down. The chip is mounted on a golden plate. In the top right corner there are testpoints.

4052

Two 4-chanell multplexers. There's control logic on the right, and on the left you can see 8 analog switches. Manufactured by Motorola in 1980. Below there's another 4052 but produced by Phillips.

4066

Four analog switches. Designers made only one switch and then they copied it four times using symmetry. Made in 1982.

4068

8-input NAND gate by Motorola

4075

3-input OR gates. One the left there are three big transistors looking like a comb. They are used in the high current output stage.

4077

Four COR gates made by Fairchild in 1980.

4081

Four 2-input AND gates. You can see them very clearly.

4572

Six different gates: NOT, NAND and NOR. Chip was flooded by silocon. Made by Phillips.

74197

Very fast counter reaching even 100MHz frequency. I have two versions from different vendors.

75450

Interface buffer designed to high voltage lines. It consists of two 30V/800mW transistors and two NAND gates. Transisors look like hair combs.

DM8200

4-bit digital comparator. It supports the followin operations: >, =, < and it has strobing input. Made by National Semiconductor in 1983.

5407

Six open-collector buffers. It's high temperature version, from -55'C to 125'C. Chip was flooded with silicon and that's why the photo it's very clear.

ETC5057

Codec, filter, A/D & D/A converter. There was some versions, varying the amount of pins. Here you can see the cheaper version. Take care, that some pins from the chip are not connected with bonding wired to the pins in the ceramic package. This means that in both cheap and expensive version there's the same chip. In top right corner there are pestpoints. Very large chip. MAde by ST Microelectronics.
